Uncorrected machine reading. This text was read by machine (Apple Vision OCR) from a scan of a newspaper page, and the page was cut into articles by machine, at the headlines found by their type size. Nothing has been corrected: expect misread words, text from a neighbouring article, and titles that are the machine reading of the headline, some of them only fragments. Quote from the scan, not from this page.
How this article was cut and titled: headline found by type size in the OCR geometry (split_tabloid.py); 1-1 of 4; machine-segmented newspaper page; uncorrected Vision OCR.

February llth saw the climax of the growing mass action against the Pahlavi dictatorship which, for years, had banned democratic unions, filled the jails with political prisoners, denied womens rights and trampled on those of the national minorities which make up 60% of the Iranian population.

A mass uprising in the streets of Tehran - leading to armed confrontations with 'elite' military corps -toppled the Baktiar government appointed by the Shah in a last desperate bid to head off the growing unrest.

The defeat of the Shah and the appointment by the Ayotollah of a Provisional Government - headed by Dr. Barzagan - has by no means however solved the problems that mobilised millions on the streets or decided the outcome of the revolution.
