am writing in reference to as week's articles 'How to fight for the right to work and 'How not to' sine revon on ine elecincians dispute at Girlings interested me a great deal, as l was the shop steward on the site and was larcely responsible for forming an EETPU shop and recruiting some 20 new members into the union, many of them having never belonged to a trade union previously; also getting as many unempioyed broiners a: possible a start for the first time in 12 months, and ridding the site of Teacners WHO were during school holidays.
This is not a feather in my cap because Photo: ANDREW W as far as l am concerned it is the way every denuine steward snould ooerate. ano nave consistently tried to do so over the past years. For these reasons 1 was yet again victimised. ane onivow a macmicent snow solidarity by Brothers was instated. I agree, that is how to fight for the right to work However, the article was used to discredit the forthcoming Right to Work Winne sameoe desate abou who should carry what banner and a continued attack on the March Council and the is. tis exo ain in the anice on the Girlings dispute that 1 am also Secretary of the Cardiff Right to Work Committee and was a delegate to the original march Council last also attended three-week march from Manchester to London.
There are no sirone courts on the claims of the International Socialists to be building a united movement against unemolovment'.
The leaflets distributed to the Girling workers regarding the victimisations (by Ine wav. wnten ov mysen ane ne ceoury BILLY WILLIAMS stewara, both IS members) specifically stated 'no return to the dole queues". Also I would point out that brothers on the job най signbc uo tor me torncomino marci not under an eelPu banner or Girlings banner but under the to Work banner-as brothers who were genuinely concerned about unemployment in Wales and the TUC's policies.
A hell of a lot of hard graft has been done in Carditt on the Right to work-leatleting getting sponsors, holding meetings with shop committees, and visiting factories etc. It is not just a question of putting E10 in someone's hand and sending them on a march.
Part of the building of a united movements encouraging and succeeding in getting employed brothers and sisters to Une win me unemoovecancon common cause. The last march was a tremendous success and achievement in ISBIT.
Fortunately articles simiar to the ones printed in last week's Red Weekly will not succeed in discrediting the March Council or the Is, but certainly leave tood Tol thought as to the efforts of the IMG In ouncine a unea movemens Billy Williams THE EDITORS REPLY: Brother Williams is enurely mistaken in savino mat we used the Girlings dispute to discredit either the Right to Work i or IS. In specifically paid tribute to the role of bott brother Williams and another member o IS, Laurence Morcombe, during the disPULE nat we did do was to compare in fighting democratic unity forged during struggle actions of leadership of IS in preventing gay workers and women workers from marching under their Williams makes no attempt to explair inese oronioitions-orontoitions which we still insist cut across the principle of building a united democratic movement of a nose wine to march daainst Un employment.
As for the IMG not building the march on the same page as the article referred to by brotner williams we issued an appeal to support the march and an article by one marcher on why he was joining it. But in supportine une march we reserve tne non to criticise specific aspects of it. Should brother Williams or any other member of IS like to reply to these criticisms we shall be happy to print them
