Uncorrected machine reading. This text was read by machine (Apple Vision OCR) from a scan of a newspaper page, and the page was cut into articles by machine, at the headlines found by their type size. Nothing has been corrected: expect misread words, text from a neighbouring article, and titles that are the machine reading of the headline, some of them only fragments. Quote from the scan, not from this page.
How this article was cut and titled: headline found by type size in the OCR geometry (split_tabloid.py); 2-2 of 5; machine-segmented newspaper page; uncorrected Vision OCR.

A look at the Ford and Carter campaigns shows clearly enough why they have failed to arouse enthusiasm.

Democrats and Republicans simply do not and offer answers for the big problems facing American workers.

More than seven million persons are unemployed; Blacks and increasing attacks on their basic rights; and the ever-present threat of war continues unabated. On all these issues, Ford takes a hard right-wing line. He is opposed to any federal action to provide jobs for the unemployed, he is opposed to the busing. needed to end segregated education; he is opposed to the right of women to choose abortion; and he urges still greater mil itary spending. and Carter, like Ford, opposes "forced busWing. At the same time, he plays up his Department support from Black leaders it had that he is a South," which has supposedly put discrimination against Blacks behind it.

While refusing to back a constitutional amendment that would allow state governments SLO once again illegal, Carter also says that he would not necessarily oppose such an amendment. At the same time that he attacks Ford for doing nothing to relieve unemployment, Carter insists that any social programs he implements will come second to need for balanced traditional excuse for denying funds te social reform programs.

In short, appear as all things to all people.
